> Personally I don’t care about all the additional features Notes has behind the scenes...
Ken, you make a very good point that often gets lost when IT people spring to the defence of the Notes client. As an administrator, I might love the scalability and performance of the server; as a power user, all those out-of-box applications like TeamRooms and discussion databases are great; as a developer, Notes allows me to rapidly build and deploy some first class applications.
But when so many end users positively loathe the mail user interface, you've got to consider that they might have a point.
I think that the Notes 8 client is heading in the right direction, but....it's still the Notes client.
I think that IBM/Lotus could really disrupt the marketplace by releasing a direct competitor to Office, and making it FREE. They've already got the OpenOffice components, all they need now is a mail client that can match or better Outlook. You'd have a Domino back-end, but a new, snappier front-end, that goes beyond the Notes paradigm.
Then offer Notes as an "extension" for those people who want all the extra goodies.
regards,
P
